Actress Brittany Murphy Dies At Age 32

LOS ANGELES - Brittany Murphy, the actress who got her start in the sleeper hit "Clueless" and rose to stardom in "8 Mile" before her movie roles declined in recent years, died Sunday in Los Angeles of what appeared to be natural causes, a Los Angeles County coroner's official said. She was 32.

Murphy was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

Murphy was transported to the hospital after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the Hollywood Hills.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Winter said Murphy's family was cooperating with the coroner's investigation. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, he said.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death, Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Messages left for Murphy's manager and agent by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed" as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

TMZ.com first reported Murphy's death Sunday morning.

Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her — people that made movies with her, people on a cruise — they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few years. He said he used to be in the mob and served prison time on federal drug charges.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very much."

Meanwhile, Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, said in a statement: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

Born Nov. 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in "Girl, Interrupted," "Clueless" and "8 Mile."

Her on-screen work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's "King of the Hill" and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature "Happy Feet."

She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, "The Expendables," set for release next year.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition, Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not."

Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher, who costarred with Murphy in 2003's romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter Sunday morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine," Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

Man Allegedly Forces Daughters to Watch "Hardcore Porn"

Friday, October 30th, 2009

DALLAS — A 1970s-era Texas law that allows parents to show "harmful material" to their children has come under fire after a prosecutor said he couldn't file charges against a man accused of forcing his 8- and 9-year-old daughters to watch hardcore online pornography.

Randall County District Attorney James Farren has asked the Texas attorney general's office to review his decision not to pursue charges in the case, which has prompted at least one lawmaker to vow to change the state's public indecency law.

"Our hands are tied. It's not our fault. I have to follow the law," Farren said Thursday. "The mother of the victims in this case was less than happy with this decision, which I understand. We were less than happy with the statute."

The law apparently was meant to protect the privacy of parents who wanted to teach children about sex education, but it states clearly that parents can't be prosecuted for showing "harmful material" to their children.

Farren said police reported the incident to his office after one of the girls told a counselor in June that her father made them watch adults having group sex and various other acts at his home in Amarillo. The parents of the girls, and their 7-year-old sister, are divorced and share custody.
The girls' mother, Crystal Buckner, wants her ex-husband to be jailed. She said she was stunned to hear from prosecutors and police that nothing can be done.

"I said, 'Are you kidding me?' There's no way. This can't be right," said Buckner, a 30-year-old stay-at-home mother.

The Associated Press typically does not publish the names of parents if it could identify children who might have been abused, but Buckner is seeking publicity about the case. She has printed out copies of the penal code, which she hands out to everyone she meets.

"I want people to know about this. I want parents to be mad and say, 'No!"' she said. "I understand in the '70s everybody wanted the government to stay out of their homes. I don't want to stop parents from having that right to teach sex education, but there's a big difference and there's a line you should not cross when teaching."

The Texas attorney general's office said Thursday that it would be months before an opinion is issued and declined further comment.

Why Did 1 In 7 Girls Get Pregnant At Robeson High?

Words of THRILL in Red;
Source: CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman

115!
That's right. At Paul Robeson High School in Chicago,

Out of 800 girls, 115 of them are pregnant. That's 1 out of every 7 girls counted; despite so-claimed prevention talks.
This is at a normal public high school, not a school for "soon-to-be-moms".

Chicago Public Schools says it does not track the overall number of teen moms in the district. But Robeson Principal Gerald Morrow knows the count at his school in Englewood: 115 young ladies who are either expecting or already have had children.

To put it in perspective, their school pictures would fill roughly six pages of their high school year book.

Morrow also said, "Absentee fathers are another factor." No: you think!?

LaDonna Denson and two other Robeson students say parents not talking to teens and, in some cases, the pursuit of public assistance also factor into the pregnancies. None of them thought they'd be moms at such a young age.

"Public assistance"? what does that mean! Peer pressure? No fear of parents? Abundant supply of teenage jackasses that can't keep thier penis' in their pants? And here's another great question I have: WHY ARE THE PARENTS NOT TALKING TO THEIR TEENS?

The authorities are acting like there is a mystery behind "WHY" this happened. I'll tell you why: these girls have no idea how to make a good decision.

They said they have support at home. But not all girls do, they said. In fact, some girls get thrown out of the home.

Not on Morrow's turf. "We're not looking at them like 'Ooh you made a mistake,'" he said. "We're looking at how we can get them to the next phase, how can we still get them thinking about graduation?"

That does it right there! The Principal Morrow is a true IDIOT! No wonder this school has a huge number of teenage girls that don't know how to keep their legs closed. How can we raise our children correctly when our adult leaderships are genuine retards? Does this not piss anyone else off? This principal is a joke.

Oh this explains it: His mom had him when she was 15. That's why accepting the problem -- and working through it -- is so important to him. No wonder he's lost. His mom was a real winner. This just adds to the fact that I'm right: some people should not reproduce.

So there's help in a teen parent program. And coming soon, right across from Robeson, developers are turning a one-time crack house into a day care for student use. "We have to provide some type of environment for them and some form of support for them," Van Vincent, CEO of VLV Development, said.

Oh my God. Whatever. I'm done with this article.

"Just cause you have a baby, that doesn't mean your life is over," one student said.

According to five women I've spoken to who have gotten pregnant during highschool; they will confirm that your life is not over... but it sure is miserable.

Whatever... doll it up anyway you want it.... a teenager should not get pregnant in any case.
Enforce that.
Teenage sex is retarded. She needs to pull her jeans back up and get out of the back seat, and he needs to keep his brain inside his shorts. Like he'd know how to use it anyway.

THEIR JUST BABIES and THEIR HAVING BABIES? COME ON, AMERICA! WHAT THE HELL IS A MATTER WITH YOU!

Ohio Woman Beats Baby Deer to Death

EUCLID, Ohio — A woman accused of beating a baby deer to death with a shovel after finding it in her flower garden has been sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Seventy-six-year-old Dorothy Richardson of the Cleveland suburb of Euclid pleaded no contest Thursday to one misdemeanor count of animal abuse and was found guilty by a municipal court judge, who also ordered Richardson to pay a $500 fine.

Richardson says she became frightened when she saw the fawn in her garden on June 15 and had meant to shoo it away with the shovel.

Earlier, she pleaded not guilty to two animal abuse counts. One charge was dropped in exchange for her new, no contest plea.

Columbine-Style Attack by Armed California Teen Thwarted by 'Heroic' Teachers

by FOX NEWS
Tuesday, August 25, 2009

A teen armed with a sword and chainsaw who had several pipe bombs strapped to his body was arrested Monday after two explosions rocked Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif., KTVU reported.
Police called the foiled attack that forced the evacuation of more than 1,200 students and teachers a Columbine-style plot, according to the station.
San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer told KTVU that the 17-year-old boy came onto campus with the chainsaw, a 2-foot-long sword and 10 homemade pipe bombs attached to a tactical vest he was wearing.
He detonated two of the pipe bombs in an empty hallway near the library, and the smoke activated a fire alarm, Manheimer said.
Authorities fielded several calls from Hillsdale High School beginning at 8:07 a.m. about a gunman on the grounds, the station said. Shortly thereafter, reports came in of an explosion inside the school.
Two teachers heard the explosions, ran into the hallway and confronted the teen, who then fled, Manheimer told KTVU. A third teacher caught up with the boy and tackled him, according to police Lt. Mike Brunicardi. Another arrived a minute later with school Principal Jeff Gilbert to help hold the suspect down.
Brunicardi called the actions by Gilbert and the teachers "simply heroic," according to KTVU.
"All the while that the teachers and principal are confronting this kid, holding him down and tackling him, he's got eight live pipe bombs attached to his person," Brunicardi said.
No one was hurt in the explosion and no gun was found, according to Manheimer.
The incident prompted the evacuation of about 1,270 Hillsdale students and several teachers.
Classes were canceled for the day as police and bomb squad units searched the premises to ensure no additional devices had been planted on school grounds.
The teen is currently classified as an uncharged minor, meaning authorities are not identifying him, San Mateo Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti told FOXNews.com.
He is in custody at the juvenile detention center while the district attorney's office awaits the full investigative report from police, she said. When they receive it, they will decide whether or not to charge him as an adult.
Guidotti said the boy is a former student at the high school but did not graduate from Hillsdale.

32 Story Highrise in Florida Has Just ONE Tenant

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO, Associated Press Writer – Sat Aug 1, 3:37 pm ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Vangelakos' southwest Florida condominium has marble floors, a large pool overlooking a river and modern furnishings that speak of affluence and luxury. What they don't have in the 32-story building is a single neighbor.

The New Jersey family of five purchased their unit four years ago, when Fort Myers was in the midst of a housing boom and any hints of an impending financial crisis were buried in lofty dreams of expansion and development. They made a $10,000 down payment and eagerly watched as builders transformed an empty lot into an opulent high rise, one that now symbolizes the foreclosure crisis.

"The future was going to be southwest Florida," said Victor Vangelakos, 45, a fire captain who planned to eventually retire and live permanently in the condo.

Most of the other tenants in the 200-unit condo didn't close on their contracts, and the few that did have transferred to an adjacent building owned by the same company because more people live there.

The Vangelakos' mortgage lender will not allow them to do the same.

That leaves them as the sole residents of the Oasis Tower One.

"It's a beautiful building," said their attorney, John Ewing, who is representing 27 others who made deposits on units. "The problem is, it's a very lonely building."

When the Vangelakos' travel from Weehawken, N.J., to spend a week or a few days in their Florida home, they have exclusive use of the pool, game room and gym, but they miss having a few tenants around.

"Being from the city, it's very eerie," Vangelakos said. "It's almost like a scary movie."

A large, circular fountain in front of the building is dry. The automatic glass doors that lead to the front lobby are locked. On the front desk is a guest sign-in sheet. The last entry: Feb. 13, 2009.

"It's like time froze here six months ago," Ewing said.

Vangelakos said they closed on the apartment in the fall, unaware the other tenants had failed to follow through. When they visited around Christmas, they didn't think much of the emptiness. They were just happy to be there.

"We wanted to believe," Cathy Vangelakos said. "We were looking for what we were offered."

On subsequent visits, however, the building grew more deserted.

The lights on the pool and palm trees were off. Their garbage shoot was sealed, a trash bin placed in front of their unit instead.

Despite the empty units, they faithfully parked in their assigned spot on the second story of the parking garage. Then those lights went off, too.

Then there were security concerns. One night, someone pounded on their door at 11 p.m. They called the front desk at the next door building, which contacted police. A search turned up no one, though a pool entrance was open.

Another morning they awoke to find lounge chairs in the pool.

The parents and their children sleep with their cell phones by their beds.

"I'm not a chicken, but this is a big building," Cathy Vangelakos said.

Betsy McCoy, vice president and associated general counsel with The Related Group, which sold the family their unit, said they have tried to help find a solution — even offering them a unit in the building next door, free of cost, while the situation is resolved.

"They haven't wanted to take us up on that," McCoy said Friday. "They frankly rejected every solution and offer and proposal that we've come up with."

McCoy said some of the interested buyers who put down deposits lost their jobs, others were unable to get mortgages and some were just nervous when the financial collapse came.

The Cape Coral-Fort Myers metropolitan area in Lee County has some of the worst economic stress — a combination of foreclosures, unemployment and bankruptcies — in the country, according to The Associated Press' monthly analysis of more than 3,100 U.S. counties.

The latest AP Economic Stress Index, which assigns each county a score from 1 to 100 with higher numbers reflecting the greatest stress from the recession, found Lee County had a score of more than 20. Anything above 11 is considered stressed.

Victor Vangelakos said they don't want to move to the tower next door because they would still be paying the mortgage and maintenance costs on the condo they own. They paid $430,000 for the unit and took out a $336,000 mortgage — essentially spending their life savings.

He'd like for The Related Group to buy them out.

"They want us to be refugees in Tower II," Victor Vangelakos said. "That's not how I expected us to live here."

The family's attorney said he has filed two lawsuits on behalf of would-be tenants because the building wasn't finished as promised. He said they expected a clubhouse, marina, private cinema and restaurants.

McCoy said those amenities could be developed, but were never promised.

On Friday evening, the pool area was dark, most of the doors locked. Cathy Vangelakos and her 19-year-old daughter, Amanda, stepped into an elevator to head up to their unit. "Going up," an automated voice chimed.

"Going up," Cathy Vangelakos said. "That's all we hear."

Wallet Stolen in 1982 Found in Tree

By: PHILIP MESSING

A woman whose wallet was swiped in Central Park 27 years ago got a blast from the past when it was discovered last week stuffed inside the hollow of a dying cherry tree.

"I remember it like it was yesterday," said Upper East Side resident Ruth Bendik, 69, referring to Oct. 24, 1982, when her wallet was snatched as she watched the New York City Marathon.

"I was in the park, walking over to greet the runners after they finished, and I was in a crush of people, and all of a sudden, I realized my purse felt very light."

The wallet was found Tuesday by Josh Galiley, 32, a tree-care supervisor for the Central Park Conser vancy, after he took down a dying black cherry tree near Rumsey Playfield at East 72nd Street.

The blue leather wallet -- with no cash inside except for a 1982 penny -- was encrusted in dirt.

Severely discolored plastic photo holders encased credit cards from such long-ago city institutions as Bell Telephone and Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank, as well as a student ID from Columbia University Teachers College and an employee ID from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The only thing missing was her $20.

After Galiley and two park workers cut the tree into large pieces, he began to root about inside a hollow to finish the job.

"I started poking around with a shovel a little more, and it was at the base of the hole. It was clearly a woman's wallet at the bottom of five feet of compost," he said.

Galiley turned the wallet over to Central Park Precinct cops, and Detective Frank Irizarry returned it to Bendik a day later.

Bendik, a health-care professional who is a patron of the Central Park Conservancy, said she had often thought of having a tree or a bench named for herself in the park.

"I am thinking that after I am dead, maybe I ought to leave a part of me in the park," she said, "never expecting that I really was already part of the park."

The End of an Era

by: THRILL

"They die in three's", so I've heard. Recently, three famous celebrities have past on.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, dies at age 50.
The beautiful Farrah Fawcett, dies at age 62.
The talented Ed McMahon, dies at 86.

Ed McMahon, famous for the line "Here's Johnny" on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where to two went hand in hand several times for 30 years.

Farrah Fawcett, the 1970s sex symbol, famous for her gorgeous teeth, Texas hair, and unfettered sensuality, died Thursday morning due to cancer.

She died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, nearly three years after being diagnosed with anal cancer.
Fawcett became a sensation in 1976 as one-third of the crime-fighting trio in "Charlie's Angels." A poster of her in a clingy, red swimsuit sold in the millions and her full, layered hairstyle became all the rage, with girls and women across America mimicking the look.
Born Feb. 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas, [HOLLA!], she was named Mary Farrah Leni Fawcett by her mother, who said she added the Farrah because it sounded good with Fawcett. As a student at the University of Texas at Austin, [Hook 'em Horns!], she was voted one of the 10 most beautiful people on the campus and her photos were eventually spotted by movie publicist David Mirisch, who suggested she pursue a film career.
She was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006. According to the American Cancer Society Web site, an estimated 5,290 Americans, most of them adults over 35, will be diagnosed with that type of cancer this year, and there will be 710 deaths.

Her face helped sell T-shirts, lunch boxes, shampoo, wigs and even a novelty plumbing device called Farrah's faucet. Her flowing blond hair, pearly white smile and trim, shapely body made her a favorite with male viewers in particular.
In 1995, at age 50, Fawcett stirred controversy posing partly nude for Playboy magazine. The following year, she starred in a Playboy video, "All of Me," in which she was equally unclothed while she sculpted and painted.
In September 2006, Fawcett, who at 59 still maintained a strict regimen of tennis and paddleball, began to feel strangely exhausted. She underwent two weeks of tests that revealed the cancer.
In "Farrah's Story," she said, "I do not want to die of this disease. So I say to God, `It is seriously time for a miracle.'"
She was a hottie that will be forever missed.

and
Michael Jackson, the king of pop, gone. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center.
Jackson died in a Los Angeles hospital.

Crap on the News

News Rant, by: THRILL
Above: President Obama Swats a Fly

San Marcos, CA- Yup... that's where! In the city of San Marcos, California, watching the afternoon news. What a freakin' joke! I about had an an..e..u r ysm..Aneurysm in front of a television set. (Yes, I had to Google that word to find out how to spell it!)
I love this new "Think Blue" that San Diego is starting up. I couldn't figure out which made me puke first: The fact that the "think blue" is just as retarded as "go green" OR the fact that thinkblue.org caters to Hindu and Buddhists philosophies. I DARE YOU TO ASK ME HOW!
But here we go: It's all over the news. President Obama swats a fly, kills it, and ofcourse, everyone... Everyone, is all over his nuts. Are you kidding me? I'm sure yall saw the video clips. One "O.C.S." exclaims, "Nice!" after Obama swatted the fly. A couple others in the background make monkey noises.
The hilarious part is that PETA is very upset.
Really? Are we serious here people? What is wrong with adults? What is wrong with people?
I'll tell you what: People buy into stupid CRAP and wet themselves all over it. I love how the Nickelodeon Network brainwashes our children with all that "the earth is melting" bull$#!+. They run ads and commercials about saving energy.....sheesh:
America produces less that 5% of the world's polution! And yet I still have to pay a fortune for a pointless smog? Energy Efficient Light Bulbs are UGLY and contain MERCURY... which I heard my whole life is BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Make up your gawddamn mind, America!

Is that my wife, or Kate Gosselin?
OH... and don't hit the "X" on your Window yet! I officially HATE how the media is "concentrated liberal". I've never seen the show John and Kate ~plus 8, or whatever it's called... but I have seen and heard NOTHING that is wrong on how Kate disciplines her children.
The media constantly shows Kate "threatening" her kids with ~future spanks, also footage of Kate spanking her kids, as seen in the picture above. Once again, WHAT IS SHE DOING WRONG? [QUOTE] America's Favorite Parenting Expert [UNQUOTE] Ann Pleshette Murphy constantly talks about how "this behavior" of Kate's is "so wrong" and... {THRILL pukes}
I can't stand people like that. So guess what, Murphy: I support the parenting of Kate Gosselin.
I love how, once again, "ADULTS" have turned into a bunch of pussies. My father owned a sign shop and had plenty of wood all over the place. If I talked back, or didn't move when he told me to, I got spanked. YUP, he used a board from the shop. My father was a great sign maker. He didn't use plywood. He invested in Duraply boards, which lasted longer in stregnth over time, as well as durability, compared to how plywood warps.
Yup, my @$$ cheeks got hit a lot with the best merchandise from McCoy's (a lumber/home store long before Home Depot came around). I'm glad my dad spanked me. I may be a monster to many of yall, and I know for a fact that many of yall DON'T like me. But fear needs to be installed in the parent/child relationship. Not a psycho-oh-my-God-my-dad-is-beating-my-mother-and-i-every-night kind of fear. I'm talking about a God-like fear, that can be enforced righteously. I challenge you (especially if you have an 7 year old who doesn't listen) to research further what I am talking about. How can fear be synonymous with respect? Find the answer, and you will be an awesome parent.
And for the record, those of you who rolled your eyes at this blog, or have some witty comment about how I don't know what it's like to have kids... guess what! I'm going to marry a woman who I will buy a $500 gift card to Macy's. Why? So she can buy a HUGE selection of belts to spank our children with when they are disrespectful at the dinner table.
Speaking of children who have never been spanked:
Kimberley Vlaminck, 18 years old
Now here is a real winner. A Belgian teenager is suing a French tattoo artist for tattooing 56 stars on her face. She claims she told him "THREE" only. But when she woke up (yeah, supposidly she fell asleep during the tattooing), he had tattooed 56 stars instead.
She says he didn't listen. The tattoo artist says that the teenager's dad showed up and freaked! He got so mad, she made up this whole story to not look bad infront of her dad.
HA! B. S. -I don't think so. Who falls asleep while having a needle rapidly stab your flesh NEAR your eye socket? Plus, I'm sure he draws on the face first, then goes back with the needle. Are you telling me she slept through all that? Horse crap.
OFCOURSE she doesn't want to take the blame! The tattoo artist is right. Fell asleep my @$$.
Now I know why tigers eat their young.
Tattoo artist Kat Von D has a makeup line, and I was told that Kat Von D makes a certain kind of makeup that is designed to hide tattoos. Just throwing that out there incase you also make a stupid decision.
I was also going to talk about a woman who worked on Wall Street, got layed off when the economy went south, then became a Playboy model. But I'm out of alcohol, so goodnight, America.

Porn Claims Endanger Science Foundation Funds

Top staffers allegedly spent long stretches surfing Internet for pornography

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, wants Congress to reconsider new funding

to the National Science Foundation amid allegations that top staffers spent

long stretches of their day surfing the Internet for pornography.

By HENRY C. JACKSON
Associated Press Writer

DES MOINES, Iowa - The ranking GOP member of the Senate Finance Committee wants Congress to reconsider new funding to the National Science Foundation amid allegations that top staffers spent long stretches of their day surfing the Internet for pornography.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, sent a letter to the foundation's Office of Inspector General on Tuesday seeking all documents it has related to the inappropriate use of the foundation's network.

The foundation is the major source of federal backing in fields such as mathematics, computer science and social sciences.

Grassley told The Associated Press on Thursday he wants Congress to reconsider $3 billion in NSF funding that is included in the current stimulus bill until his questions are answered.
"I think they ought to. I think they need to," he said.

The senator said he sought the information after a team of staffers led by his finance committee aide discovered numerous investigations into the misuse of the Internet by science foundation employees. The investigations were buried inside a semiannual report on NSF's activities, he said.

According to the report, one senior staff member spent as much as 20 percent of his time during a two-year period at lurid sites and in sexually explicit chat rooms. That time cost taxpayers more than $40,000, the report stated.

Other employees were also alleged to have watched, downloaded and e-mailed porn.
Agency spokesman Jeff Nesbit said the foundation takes the report and Grassley's inquiry seriously. He said the foundation is cooperating and has already taken steps to address the inspector general's report.

"NSF immediately implemented additional IT systems controls to focus in particular on enforcement of the foundation's long-standing policy prohibiting the use of its IT systems to access sexually explicit, gambling and other inappropriate Web sites," Nesbit said in a written statement.

He said several employees were disciplined and at least three staffers were fired because of their inappropriate use of the Internet.

Grassley is renowned in Washington for using his position on the Finance Committee to practice a particularly aggressive brand of oversight. His staff has previously scrutinized megachurches and the Smithsonian, among other targets.

Grassley said he is pushing for more information about the National Science Foundation because he's concerned the issues in the report speak to a wider, cultural problem at the agency. He also cites the foundation's large budget.

The foundation was created as an independent federal agency in 1950 to promote science. It has an annual budget of more than $6 billion and funds, by its own estimate, about 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by the nation's colleges and universities.

Woman's ex-Friends Used Cold as Weapon

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. – A 19-year-old woman who thought she was going to a party was instead driven to a rural wooded area and abandoned in 8-degree weather in a long-planned attack by three friends angry with her over an insurance claim, police said Thursday.

The victim was wearing only a dress and one shoe, having lost the other in a struggle as she was dragged from the car, said Lt. Frank Cannella of the North Bergen police. A motorist soon stopped and let the victim use a cell phone but refused to give her a lift.

The victim used the phone to call one of the women who abandoned her, Cannella said. She spent more than an hour in the freezing cold before flagging down another motorist, who took her to a hospital, he said.

The North Bergen woman, whom police did not identify, may need surgery after suffering frostbite to both feet Jan. 16 in Alpine, a town on the Hudson River about 18 miles north of New York City, Cannella said.

"These actions were so profound that it leads you to believe there was a tremendous indifference to human life," Cannella said.

Maria Contreras-Luciano, 22, of Dumont, and Amber Crespo, 20, and Dyanne Velasquez, 21, both of North Bergen, face kidnapping, assault and conspiracy charges and are free on $200,000 bail. Crespo is also charged with making terroristic threats.

The women planned the attack for more than a month, Cannella said. The suspects wanted revenge after the 19-year-old sued Crespo's auto insurance carrier after a car accident, he said, adding that he didn't have details about the accident or claim.

Marvin Walden, attorney for Crespo, said his client had no idea what she was getting into and was not part of any conspiracy. He said the dispute was between one of the other women and the victim and was about a man, not an insurance claim.

"My client thought she was going to a rap concert," Walden said. "There was no intent on her part, or discussion beforehand, about participating in anything resembling a kidnapping."
Attorneys for the two other women did not return telephone calls and e-mails seeking comment Thursday.

The victim arrived at Crespo's home to meet up with the three women and then drive together to a party, according to authorities. She noted that her friends weren't dressed for a party but was reassured by their words and by an evening dress on a hanger inside the car.

The incident didn't come to the attention of police until the victim reported it Jan. 20.
A man identified as Contreras-Luciano's boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of hindering apprehension after he declined to turn his car over to investigators, police said. Police believe his car was used in the attack.
